In Jewish culinary tradition, breakfast recipes are often overlooked — unless it’s Yom Kippur. But, Shabbat breakfast or a slow Sunday morning brunch is an ideal way to start a weekend morning with friends or family.
Our favorite family recipes for the occasion include a Sephardi cheese-filled flaky pastries called boyos, which are served for breakfast on Saturday mornings along with long cooked eggs called huevos haminados. There are also challah French toast recipes — both sweet and savory — and numerous egg dishes including several types of shakshuka and a North African omelette laden with potatoes, spinach, and peas that comes from Elle Brosh’s great-grandmother who was born in Algeria. There are also sweet options like blueberry stonekes, which Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor David Lenga remembers his mother making, and pastry chef Duff Goldman’s very chocolaty babka.
