Recipes Passed Down by Jewish Dads

In retired ambassador Jeremy Issacharoff’s family, there’s a tradition of the men passing down some of the most treasured recipes like one for osavo, a Bukharian Shabbat dish of rice, tender hunks meat, and fruit. In our editor Devra Ferst’s family, her dad Walter is the one who makes matzah ball soup, gefilte fish from scratch, and the family brisket loaded with onions. And for Gabriella Stern, Dave Dreifus, and Kobi Sivan, sweet recipes in their families like ice cream cake, rugelach, and sufganiyot all come from or nod to the bakeries captained by their fathers and grandfathers.
This Father’s Day, we hope you will join us in honoring the fathers and grandfathers who have kept these recipes alive.
Do you have a favorite recipe from your father or grandfather? We’d love to hear about it. Find all of these dishes and more in this collection and explore more Jewish recipes here.
