Konafi (Sweet Pastry) With Saffron Syrup

Yield: Serves 4


  • 4 cups thawed frozen kataifi
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 (8 ounce) ball fresh buffalo mozzarella, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup saffron syrup (see recipe below)

  • Step 1

    Put the kataifi in a bowl and comb through it with your fingers.

  • Step 2

    Melt the butter in a stainless steel or cast-iron skillet over low heat. Add the kataifi, spreading it out evenly and patting it down in the skillet.

  • Step 3

    Sprinkle with the sugar and arrange the mozzarella slices on top.

  • Step 4

    Cook until the cheese melts and the bottom is golden brown, 10-15 minutes.

  • Step 5

    Remove from the heat. Invert onto a plate, drizzle with the saffron syrup, and cut into wedges.
